This group of receivers could be the deepest group that the Bills have had since drafting Josh Allen in 2018, one of the receivers battling for a potential starting spot is newcomer Trent Sherfield. Some Bills fans may remember him on the Dolphins last year as the player involved in the infamous “Butt Punt”, but I think Bills fans will be excited when he gets on the field and we see what he can do.

Sherfield has been a bit of a journeyman after going undrafted after a solid career in college at Vanderbilt. He signed as an UDFA with the Cardinals and made the team mostly as a special teamer and ended up hanging around as a consistent presence for three seasons. Up until last season with the Dolphins he had made his biggest impact on special teams, recovering 6 fumbles during his stint in Arizona, and one year stops in San Francisco and Miami. However, he has shown from early on in his career that when given the opportunity he can make plays as a receiver and should look to get ampule opportunities in Buffalo on the offensive side of the ball. Last season in Miami was a bit of a break out year for him at the wide out position he set career highs in yards (417), Receptions (30), Touchdowns (2), and was a consistent number three weapon in that offense behind Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill.

It’s easy to see why Sherfield was a target of Beane and McDermott this past off season. He is a big receiver that runs in the 4.4’s, can play the slot or on the outside, and something we here in Buffalo love, he plays special teams. He is also an excellent blocker, he was rated as the best blocker at his position by PFF last season and that should make him fit in pretty well in this offense. Look for a lot of packages with him and Gabe Davis on the field together to open up holes in the secondary for some of the Bills other playmakers. On today’s (Tuesday’s) initial depth chart it has Sherfield as second string at the X Receiver position behind Stefon Diggs, which makes it look like the Bills want to use him on the outside this season. But look for Sherfield to move around of the field, playing both on the outside, inside in the slot, and of course, on Special Teams.

Upon signing with the Bills and playing with Josh Allen, Sherfield had this to say, “If you want to be an elite receiver, come and play with an elite quarterback”. It looks like he is expecting to play a big role here this season, and if he makes plays like this one here, there is no reason to believe that he won’t.
