The Buffalo Bills reached an agreement with kicker Tyler Bass on a four-year contract extension on Thursday.
According NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, the deal is worth up to $21 million with $12.3 million guaranteed.
A sixth round pick in 2020, Bass has lived up to the “big leg” expectations. Over three seasons, he has converted on 85.6% of his field goals and 97.5% of point after attempts during the regular season. In the playoffs, he has connected on 10 of 12 field goals.
Bass has been a fan favorite in Buffalo since his arrival in 2020 with the patented single eye black, which is a tribute to his grandmother whom he credits for helping him attain the ability to walk on at Georgia Southern.
Last year, Bass’ field goal percentage of 87.1 ranked 11th in the league and he was an impressive 10 for 11 on kicks in the 40 to 49 yard range. Last year alone, Bass had three game-winning kicks as time expired: at Baltimore in Week 4; at Detroit on Thanksgiving; vs Miami in Week 15.
When did you realize that the Bills had found their franchise kicker? For me, it was this 54-yard field goal in the 2020 playoffs which ended up being the difference in the Bills’ first playoff win in 25 years:
Kickers probably don’t get the credit they deserve. They are expected to make kicks, and when they don’t, they are bashed. But, seeing some of the kicking situations across the league, the Bills and fans of the Bills should feel great knowing Bass will be the placekicker for the foreseeable future.
