Bills vs Steelers: Stock up/down from final preseason game

The Buffalo Bills defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers at home in their final preseason game of the season, 28-27 in a comeback victory. The Bills went undefeated in the preseason (3-0) and next will be cutting their roster down to 53.

Here is my stock up/down from the Bills’ Thursday night victory:  

Stock up  

RB Frank Gore Jr.  

Frank Gore Jr. was a big part of the Bills offense Thursday night. Gore was efficient in both the run and pass game for Buffalo, totaling 72 yards. On the ground, he finished with 10 carries for 27 yards and a touchdown. He totaled most of his yardage in the passing game, grabbing five receptions for 45 yards. Gore has done enough this preseason and throughout training camp for him to land on the Bills practice squad once again.  

WR Skyler Bell  

The Bills fourth-round rookie receiver out of UConn, Skyler Bell, finally got to show his talent in the preseason and he made the most out of his opportunity. Bell led the Bills receiving room through the air with seven receptions for 49 yards. He also got involved on the ground with a jet sweep which he took 28 yards to the house for his first touchdown.  

P Tommy Doman Jr.  

Tommy Doman punted four times Thursday night, totaling 208 yards, averaging 52.0 yards a punt, and pinning Pittsburgh inside their own 20-yard line twice. I think Doman has done enough with what opportunities he was given and has earned himself the starting punter job over Wishnowsky.  

QB Shane Buechele 

Shane Buechele played the entire game for Buffalo on Thursday night, and he played well. Buechele attempted 38 passes, completing 26 of them, for 196 yards. While he didn’t throw any touchdowns, he also didn’t throw any picks, and gave Buffalo an opportunity the whole way. Buechele will likely land on the Bills practice squad again.  

Secondary 

The Bills’ third-string secondary played very well in coverage against Pittsburgh’s two young quarterbacks. Buffalo held the Steelers to just 135 passing yards. Anthony Kendall and D.J. Miller stood out, making multiple plays in the secondary and causing pass break ups.  

Stock down  

Punt returner  

The Bills are still looking to find their punt returner for the season. Ray Davis was given an opportunity early but muffed the ball which was recovered by Pittsburgh in the Bills red zone. If Mecole Hardman does not make the 53-man roster, the Bills might have Khalil Shakir receive punts starting the regular season.  

P Mitch Wishnowsky 

Veteran punter Mitch Wishnowsky punted just twice in Thursday night’s game, but one only traveled 19 yards.

Mecole Hardman  

Mecole Hardman has had some bad drops in the preseason. He was targeted twice Thursday but had just one reception for two yards, dropping one in the red zone. Hardman is likely to be stashed on the Bills practice squad ahead of the regular season.
