Buffalo Bills + Odell Beckham Jr. = Super Bowl?
“Josh Allen runs out of the pocket… he scrambles and throws it deep, deep down field and… OBJ catches it… OBJ caught it! The Bills have won the Super Bowl!”
Imagining Odell Beckham Jr. as the final piece to the puzzle could give Bills fans chills. Now, where is this idea of OBJ to the Bills coming from? Well let me fill you in on a little secret: Von Miller has been pounding the table to bring his former Super Bowl Champion teammate to Buffalo.
OBJ, over the course of his career, has had a bad reputation put forth by the mainstream media. They’ve labeled him a diva and a locker room cancer for how his time ended with the Giants and the Browns. However, each of those teams struggled to stay relevant in their divisions or to be a true playoff contender while OBJ was there. When OBJ was sent to a team with championship aspirations in the LA Rams, he was by all accords seen as a good teammate, unselfish, and had a positive impact in the locker room.
He also made a big impact on the field for the Rams, especially in the postseason, after being traded from the Browns. In the four playoff games last year, he posted: 54 yards and a TD, 69 yards, 113 yards, and in the Super Bowl he had 52 yards and a TD before leaving due to injury in the second quarter. Last year, he was an example of a reliable teammate who got better as the season got deeper into the postseason. There’s no doubt that he could help the Bills with a Super Bowl run.
Another thing to take into account is the fact that before getting injured in the Super Bowl, he was on track to have a great chance of being the Super Bowl MVP. He was opening up the field for the likes of Cooper Kupp and Van Jefferson. Having him on the field was an added benefit in the playoffs, especially after WR Robert Woods suffered a season-ending injury.
Now, after playing for three different teams and gaining postseason/Super Bowl experience with the Rams last season, OBJ has proven he can help any receiving corps become a stronger unit. He can also help any playoff contender catapult into a Super Bowl favorite.
One might wonder how he would fit on the Bills, how he will be able to find a spot on the roster, or other things of that nature. However, with the culture that Sean McDermott has built within the Buffalo Bills locker room, it’s clear that OBJ would fit in seamlessly.
While the Bills do have a plethora of talent at the wide receiver position, there is the idea of the rich getting richer. While they have Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis, Khalil Shakir, Isaiah McKenzie, and Jamison Crowder, there is nothing wrong with adding another receiver, especially with the talent that OBJ has. Personally, I believe that only Diggs is better than him as a wide receiver on this current roster, and I am one of Gabe Davis’ biggest supporters. Adding OBJ would open up the offense even more and provide more single coverage opportunities for the likes of Diggs and Davis.
This is why Von Miller, who won a Super Bowl with OBJ last year, is so persistent in his recruiting of the veteran wide receiver.
The writing is on the wall for OBJ to come to Buffalo and put the Bills over the top. While already being the lead dog in terms of Super Bowl contention, adding OBJ would only help the cause. The offense would go from being feared by every defense around the league, to, well, something even scarier than that. One can only hope that this comes true (I do believe it will), but time will only tell as to when OBJ decides who he wants to spend his future with. The Bills could sign him and let him recover from his injury while learning the playbook and getting accustomed to the team culture. Or, they could make sure he’s fully recovered before making their move. Either way, the fit seems right if it can work out financially.
Brandon Beane just recently restructured the contract of Dion Dawkins, which cleared up over $5.6 million in cap space. They now have around $10M in cap space, according to Spotrac. Beane does have safety Jordan Poyer’s contract on his mind as well, so it will be interesting to see where that money is used moving forward.
For now, Bills Mafia just has to sit back, relax and hope that Odell Beckham Jr. feels that Buffalo is the right place for him, and that they can make the financials work.
