The Buffalo Bills finished day 3 of training camp at St. John Fisher University in Rochester, New York. The Bills held three press conferences that will all be covered in this article, starting from special teams coordinator Matthew Smiley. After practice the Bills held two more pressers with the star safety duo, Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer.
Matthew Smiley
Matthew Smiley had the first press conference of the day starting at 9:00 A.M. EST. Smiley started his presser talking about the return jon saying both receivers Deonte Harty and Khalil Shakir are in the mix for the return job, this being the result of returner/RB Nyheim Hines suffering a knee injury right before training camp.
Matthew Smiley said that Harty is very comfortable being a return man and said later that safety Micah Hyde is the emergency return man, which was the case last year when they needed one. Smiley finished by talking about the new kickoff rule and saying it won’t impact what he does with the roster.
Micah Hyde
Micah Hyde was the first press conference after practice concluded. Hyde started by saying he feels amazing, in regards to his neck injury which mostly kept him out of the 2022 season. Hyde later said that head coach, and now defensive play caller, Sean McDermott wants to be more aggressive. Hyde said he thought he was done after he suffered a neck injury last season and he now feels ready to go and that he can’t wait to get the pads back on.
Micah Hyde said that he can’t wait to be back on the field with Jordan Poyer. Hyde said that he is moving with a lot of urgency, now being 32. Hyde stated he loves quarterback Josh Allen, believes he is a big “leader” and that he is going to play for another “15 years, hopefully.” Hyde said talking about his view on the cornerback position battle and how it “brings the best out of you” and he loves to see guys going out there and making plays.
Jordan Poyer
Jordan Poyer was the last press conference of the day at Bills training camp. Poyer said, “I feel great” going into this season and that he is enjoying all of the moments. Poyer said that McDermott is pretty intense and he is in a lot more meetings then last season. Poyer stated the defense had an up and down day today, which is normal for training camp, both the offense and defense shine and have low points.
Jordan Poyer said, “It’s a game that I love” and that the game of football does not define him but he has a big respect for the game. Poyer later said that he is really excited about this upcoming season and that he wasn’t himself this past season due to his injury. Poyer said playing alongside Hyde will raise both of their games and that linebacker Baylon Spector is a “ball player.” Lastly Poyer finished by saying “I’m just trying to take it all in. Be present in these moments, I’m not worried about what’s going to happen this off-season or next year.. you know, this is my time, this is our time. Poyer said to “Learn, grow and evolve” as a football team.
