Built In Buffalo writers and contributors weigh in on the Bills’ Week 6 heavyweight matchup in Kansas City

Built In Buffalo content writers have collaborated to share their predictions for Week 6. It’s the league’s two most exciting quarterbacks going head to head, and the Bills will be on the road in KC once again. Five of the last six matchups between these AFC powerhouses have taken place in Kansas City. Last year, the Bills beat the Chiefs in the regular season, 38-20, and the Chiefs got the upper edge in the Divisional Round in what was the best playoff game of all time in the eyes of many.

Kam Towle: It’s the best two quarterbacks in the league — with both of their teams sitting at 4-1 – playing for the upper edge for the No. 1 seed in the AFC. There should be a lot of points in this one. Allen and Mahomes will both put up numbers, probably both through the air and on the ground, but the difference in the game will be the Bills defense. This type of game is the exact reason why Beane went out and signed Von Miller. Mahomes hasn’t seen this version of the Bills d-line yet. They may finally have the speed off the edge with Miller and Rousseau to get to Mahomes. And, it will be easier on Leslie Frazier without having to worry about Tyreek Hill this time around. The Chiefs defense, on the other hand, is ranked middle of the pack and they are starting two late-round rookie cornerbacks this week. Allen should be able to make his reads and find his targets to move the ball continuously throughout the game which is forecasted for beautiful football weather in Kansas City. Bills win this high-scoring game and take the inside track to earning a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Prediction: Bills 37, Chiefs 26.

Dave Myers: This is the game everyone has been waiting for since the NFL schedule was released: Josh Allen vs. Patrick Mahomes. Allen has been spectacular against the Chiefs the last two times he has faced them. I do not see this being any different, with the offense firing on all cylinders so far in 2022. The Chiefs will do things to disguise coverage, but Allen has become a master of reading and reacting to teams dropping seven or eight in coverage. Look for Allen and the offense to keep the momentum going this week and pull away in the second half. Look for Von Miller, Matt Milano and Tremaine Edmunds to have big games defensively. Bills roll past their rivals in a statement victory and grab a firm hold on the AFC’s No. 1 seed heading into their bye week. Prediction: Bills 37, Chiefs 20.

Peter DiBiasi: Not going to say a Week 6 game in the NFL is the biggest game of the year for the Bills, but it is pretty close. If the Bills end up losing, the sky is not falling — they can still get the one seed and win the division. When it comes to this week’s matchup, it’s the battle between the two best quarterbacks in the NFL: Mahomes and Allen. The Bills are looking for revenge after last year’s devastating playoff loss in the Divisional Round. The Bills will have to key in on a star on each side of the ball for KC. Travis Kelce, coming off a four-touchdown performance against the Raiders, will be very important for the Bills to limit. That job will be put on Matt Milano and Taron Johnson. Milano has been one of the best coverage linebackers in the NFL this year, and Johnson is one of the best slot corners in the NFL. The good thing for Bills defense is that they won’t have to worry about Tyreek Hill. The Chiefs’ receivers on the outside are solid, but nothing that the Bills can’t handle. But when it comes to Chris Jones, it will be a tall task for this offensive line which has had some significant struggles this year. It will be up to Morse, Bates, and Saffold to limit Jones and keep him away from Allen. Saffold was very successful with the Titans when he faced off with Jones, so that is something to keep an eye on. When it comes to the Bills offense, I expect them to have their way through the air. Allen is playing at a dangerous level right now, and the Chiefs are starting two rookie corners in the secondary — one who is making his first career start. The Bills should be able to move the ball quickly through the air and sprinkle the run in a bit. The Chiefs rank 16th in rush defense according to PFF. The Bills should be able to run a little to keep the pressure off Allen. Prediction: Bills 34, Chiefs 23.

Phil Gong: What more can you ask for from a game. It’s Sunday afternoon and we all get to kick back and relax and watch the rematch of one of the best playoff games in NFL history.
In this rematch, the Bills are looking to get revenge, not just for Week 6, but also down the road in the playoffs.
I think Buffalo will beat the Chiefs this time around, however, I think it will be a decently close game for a majority of the game until the fourth quarter. Josh Allen will throw for 375 yards and 4 touchdowns, including one rushing touchdown and 35 yards on the ground. James Cook will become a bigger weapon this week with a rushing and receiving touchdown, showing the nation the Bills have their own version of Alvin Kamara, and putting the CMC and Saquon conversations to bed. Kaiir Elam will also get another interception this week, while Von Miller records three sacks. Prediction: Bills 48, Chiefs 38.

Daniel Adams: Bills fans have been waiting to see this rematch since the Chiefs stopped the Bills short in the playoffs last season. Buffalo is prepared to take on the Chiefs, and their new additions will be the big factor. The Bills are finally getting back to full-health (apart from a few players), so the Bills should be ready to go this week. The Bills beat the Chiefs in the regular season last year in Kansas City, 38-20, so it is not unlikely that the Bills can win this game on the road. The Bills will be prepared for a good offense with Patrick Mahomes at the helm and throwing it to his number one guy in Travis Kelce. The Bills will adapt as the game goes on and stop the Chiefs’ duo. Offensively, the Bills will do what they normally do and they’ll be able to put up points. I think they’ll continue to look Gabe Davis’ way this week and make him a big part of the passing game, especially if the Chiefs are double-teaming Diggs. The Bills will win over the Chiefs this week and advance to 5-1 on the season. Prediction: Bills 35, Chiefs 31

Matt Homan: It feels like the winner of the Bills at Chiefs game this Sunday will have the inside track to the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. Both the Bills and Chiefs come into this game at 4-1 and have favorable regular season opponents the rest of the season.
On paper, the Bills are the better of the two teams, as both their offense AND defense are ranked top two in the NFL. The Chiefs have the top-ranked offense in the league, but their defense has been their achilles heel, ranking 23rd overall. Look for Mahomes to “take what he can get” against the Bills, which will include dump-offs to running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and his number-one safety valve, Travis Kelce. The Chiefs offense doesn’t include Tyreek Hill any longer, but Juju Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Mecole Hardman have done an adequate job filling his shoes.
Josh Jacobs was able to run down the Chiefs’ throat last Monday night, racking up 151 yards on 21 carries. Expect the Bills to try the same early with Devin Singletary. If they have even minimal success in the run game, this could spell the Chiefs’ doom as it’ll open up the deadly Bills passing attack. 50 points could be a real possibility for Buffalo. Prediction: Bills 48, Chiefs 28.

Ben Morningstar: We all know what happened in last year’s Divisional Round and we don’t need to repeat it. Buffalo is the better team in this game, let’s not overthink this one. I think without Hil on the Chiefs, that allows Buffalo to play more freely on defense and focus on Kelce more. Allen, Davis and Diggs will feast on the Chiefs’ defense again. I see the Bills winning this one. Prediction: Bills 34, Chiefs 26.
