Here’s a breakdown of what we know — and what the Bills face — now that Ed Oliver has been ruled out for Sunday:

What happened

  • Ed Oliver injured his left ankle during practice on Wednesday, when he was stepped on.
  • By Thursday, he was seen in a walking boot, using a medical scooter, and did not participate in Thursday’s practice.
  • Head coach Sean McDermott confirmed on Friday that Oliver will not play versus the New York Jets.

Oliver’s recent performance

  • In Week 1 vs. the Baltimore Ravens, he had one of his stronger games of recent years. He recorded six tackles, one sack, and forced a key fumble (on Derrick Henry) that helped spark the Bills’ comeback.
  • He was an important disruptive force, especially against the run and in generating pressure. His absence leaves a noticeable gap.

Implications for the Bills vs. Jets

  1. Run defense weakenedOliver is one of the Bills’ key run-stoppers. Without him, New York may try to emphasize ground attacks, especially if Buffalo’s defensive tackles struggle filling in.
  2. Spotlight on backups and depth
    • Second-round rookie T.J. Sanders looks likely to step into a larger role.
    • Other options include Landon Jackson (rookie), Jordan Phillips, or Zion Logue from the practice squad.
    • The Bills are already thin at tackle behind Oliver. Free agent addition Larry Ogunjobi is suspended for six games, so Buffalo’s depth gets really tested.
  3. Short-term vs Long-term outlook
    • McDermott said there’s a chance Oliver could be available in the near future (including the game after Sunday), but at this moment the status beyond this game is uncertain.
    • Given the walking boot, scooter, and lack of practice, he’ll need time. If memory serves, Oliver has had ankle/foot/leg issues before, so the Bills are likely to take a cautious approach.
  4. Matchup considerations vs. the Jets
    • The Jets showed in Week 1 that their run game can be dangerous. Without Oliver clogging gaps, they may try to test Buffalo’s interior defensive line.
    • Buffalo might need to adjust their pass rush, stunts, or gap assignments to compensate, leaning more on ends and linebackers.
    • If Sanders or whoever fills in struggles, it could force a defensive scheme tweak.

What to watch for

  • How well T.J. Sanders (or the starter in Oliver’s absence) handles 1-on-1 blocks and interior run fits.
  • Whether Buffalo adjusts its defensive front (perhaps more rotation, more use of defensive ends inside, or more movement up front).
  • How the Jets take advantage, especially in early downs, by running between the tackles (inside) or using misdirections to make the interior DL chase.
  • Oliver’s recovery timeline — whether Buffalo uses Friday’s status reports, pregame warmups, etc., for any hints about his status for the Dolphins game next week.

Bottom line

Losing Ed Oliver for Sunday’s game vs. the Jets is a significant blow for the Bills’ defensive front. He was coming off a big game and is a key inside presence against both the pass and run. The Bucks will need backup tackle(s) to step up, and Buffalo’s defensive coaching staff will likely have to adjust tactics. It could be a critical test of depth, especially early in the season.
