The Buffalo Bills have underperformed to say the least over the last three weeks. With sluggish first halves of games versus the Jaguars, Giants and Patriots; the Bills have gone 1-2 over their last three games after blowing out the Raiders, Commanders and Dolphins.
What we fail to remember, though, is that on many occasions in Bills history (and other great teams’ history), good teams go through multi-game lulls.
Here’s a look at four other Super Bowl caliber Bills teams that had dud-stretches in their otherwise dominant seasons.
In 2021, the Bills went 10-6. Four of those six losses came over a six-week span including the “wind game” against New England, the loss to the putrid Jaguars and the annihilation by the Colts in Buffalo. The ’21 Bills would right the ship, win the AFC East, have the “perfect” offensive game versus the Patriots in the playoffs and were 13-seconds away from the AFC Championship.
The 1995 Buffalo Bills team had Super Bowl aspirations prior to the season. They went on a seven-game stretch that saw them go 3-4 and were outscored 129-165. They’d go on to have a 10-6 record, win the AFC East, win a playoff game and lose in the divisional round versus the Steelers.
The 1993 Buffalo Bills team went on a 1-4 stretch that saw them get shutout at Pittsburg, and only score 7 at Kansas City. They were outscored 54-80 in these games. This Bills team would win the AFC East, secure home field advantage and go on to their fourth of four Super Bowls that season.
In the 1992 season the Buffalo Bills last 5 games of the regular season saw them go 2-3, including losses to the 5-7 Colts, 4-9 Jets and a blowout loss the Oilers 27-3. The loss to the Oilers ensured the Bills wouldn’t win the AFC East for the first time in four seasons. The ’92 Bills would go on to run the table in the playoffs and make their third of four Super Bowls.
It’s a long season Bills fans. Luckily the Bills issues are coming to light in the first-half of the season. The 2023 Bills, though not perfect, have a hall of fame caliber quarterback and many players who have overcome dead parts of the season in the past. Look for the Bills to rebound Thursday night versus the Buccaneers.
