Gabriel Davis has a history of being a streaky wide receiver. He was dubbed “Big Game Gabe” after having some of his biggest games either in the playoffs or in games with playoff implications.
After having 201 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns versus the Chiefs in the Divisional Round loss in the 2021 playoffs, many thought Gabriel Davis along with Stefon Diggs would become the NFL’s best 1-2 wide receiver punch in 2022.
That fantasy didn’t come to fruition for Bills Mafia, however, and even though Davis had a career high 48 receptions, 836 receiving yards and tied his season-best with 7 touchdown receptions; many looked at his 2022 season as a failure.
Gabe Davis was dubbed the #2 receiver last season—a role he hadn’t held at a professional level. He started all 15 games he was active for, which was more than any of his previous two seasons. He had always been at best the number three option for Josh Allen until 2022 when more defensive eyes were on him and what promised to be an electrifying season, turned into a failure.
Enter the 2023 season. Possibly the biggest offseason move Brandon Beane made was drafting rookie tight end, Dalton Kincaid in the first round.
Though on paper he’s a tight end, Kincaid’s role in the Bills offense will be a true slot receiver—a position the Bills haven’t had since 2021 with Cole Beasley.
Other than Davis, Diggs and Kincaid, there are many other offensive weapons that defenses have to account for when they matchup against the Bills offense—including Dawson Knox, James Cook, Deonte Hardy and Trent Sherfield.
With such a diverse arsenal, the attention will be off Gabe Davis and look for him to put his head down and produce.
This offseason, it was reported that Davis worked on his route-running and hand drills and although it’s a small sample size, he has improved upon some of his advanced metrics that were lacking last season including Yards After Catch (YAC)/Reception and drop percentage.
If Gabe Davis can return to his pre-2022 form, this Bills offense might be the best it’s ever been.
