Overview
The 22-year old safety out of the University of Minnesota, Tyler Nubin, garnered some attention early in the scouting world. He comes from a family of athletes and is showing that he may be the best of them all. His fifth season for the Gophers was a great one. Nubin started all 12 games finishing with 53 tackles, one sack, five interceptions, four pass breakups, and one forced and recovered fumble. That level of play earned him AP Second-Team All-American honors along with being name to the All-Big Ten First Team.
He finished his final season in Minnesota with a 90.1 PFF coverage grade, 84.3 tackling grade, and 70.2 run defense grade. This would mark him at a 89.2 total defense grade. This would be the highest of his career at Minnesota after posting a 76.4 and 72.6 total defense grade in 2022 and 2021. His 20% forced incompletion was tied for 20th best in college football (min. 200 snaps) while he finished first in reception percentage, 30%. He is the type of safety that can make an impact in both the running and passing game.
Positives
- Played mostly free safety in college but can play all over the field.
- Solid tackler; great strength while tackling – 9.4% missed tackle rate.
- Makes a play on the ball whenever he can – 13 INTs in four seasons.
- Elite awareness; reads plays well and has great feel for the game (both in the run and pass game).
- Prototypical size for a safety at 6’2″, 210 lbs.
Negatives
- Doesn’t have elite speed or agility, which could cause issues against faster offenses.
- Will need to get better in man coverage at the next level.
- Footwork will need to improve to make up for lack of speed.
- Angle tackling and ball-tracking can be improved at times.
Draft Projection
Nubin quickly became one of my “draft crushes” and is a player I could see having a big impact immediately for any team that drafts him. I’ve given him a mid-late first-round grade but, due to his position, we could see him drop to the second round. Nubin is a physical safety that will be able to use his size to his advantage right away in the NFL.
With the Bills needing to get younger at the safety position, Nubin is a prospect to watch. He could fill that Micah Hyde role and learn from a proven veteran, Jordan Poyer. Sean McDermott loves smart safeties that can excel in multiple areas of the field. Could that mean Nubin is the next stud to emerge on a McDermott defense? I believe he can be.
