Now that we’re through training camp and just two weeks away from the regular season, Buffalo Bills players will have an important voting opportunity that will identify their leaders this season—very soon, they will vote for their 2024 team captains.
Six of the eight captains from 2023 are not returning to the Bills this season including Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis, Mitch Morse, Jordan Poyer, Micah Hyde, and Tyler Matakevich.
With many of their past leaders out of the picture this season, who will the players pick to be their new captains?
Here are the eight players who best fit the team captain role:
Josh Allen
Josh Allen has been voted a team captain in each of his six seasons in the league. A bonafide leader on and off the field, Josh is a shoo-in to be one of the Bills captains again in 2024.
Von Miller
Only two players are returning to the Bills in 2024 who were captains in 2023. Josh Allen and Von Miller. Many of the younger Bills players look up to the soon-to-be Hall of Fame pass rusher, and his leadership skills have proven to be important even if Miller isn’t on the field.
Taron Johnson
Taron Johnson will enter his seventh season with the Bills. Over the past three seasons, he has proven to be among the best slot cornerbacks in the league. With the loss of Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer, Johnson is now the leader in the Bills’ secondary.
Dion Dawkins
The 2023 season was a career year for seven-year veteran Dion Dawkins. The durable Dawkins started all seventeen games last season and was selected to his third consecutive Pro Bowl. He’s most definitely earned a captain nod.
Dawson Knox
With the drafting of tight end Dalton Kincaid in the first round of the 2023 draft, one would think that veteran tight end Dawson Knox would be bitter about what his role with the team would be. On the contrary, Knox welcomed Kincaid with open arms.
Dawson Knox’s play has been a rollercoaster since he was drafted in 2019, but his dedication to playing, even when injured, and making big plays when they matter most may well lead to him being a 2024 Bills captain.
Ed Oliver
In the 2023 offseason, Ed Oliver opted to re-sign with the Bills before his contract season as opposed to trying the open market. The team’s trust in him bolstered Oliver to have the best season of his career. Ed Oliver is entering his sixth season with the Bills and is a strong candidate to be a Bills captain.
Terrel Bernard
With Matt Milano missing essentially all of the 2024 season, 2023 surprise starting linebacker Terrel Bernard will have a chance to be the Bills best linebacker again in 2024.
The three-year veteran helped fill the void of Milano being out most of 2023 and Bernard’s leadership on the field last year may well catapult him to being a team captain.
Reggie Gilliam
An undrafted free agent signing by the Bills in 2020, Reggie Gilliam has played any and every role asked of him by the Bills coaching staff. Gilliam’s special teams presence makes him a valuable commodity to this Bills squad and his grit and determination may likely lead him to be a team captain.
