The second-year tackle had back surgery in the offseason

“The Mountain” as Bills fans call him (in reference to The Mountain from Game of Thrones), Spencer Brown is entering his second year in the NFL and looking to make a statement at right tackle once again for the Bills. But, he has an injury to fully overcome before taking the next steps in his career.

Buffalo brought in veteran David Quessenberry to compete for the right tackle job, and when the first depth chart of the year came out last week, I’m sure many of us were surprised to see Quessenberry listed ahead of Brown. Brown is still nursing a back injury, which he had a procedure for this offseason, and that is the big reason he’s listed as the backup right now. And, due to all of the injuries the Bills have had on the offensive line in training camp, they’ve had to do a lot of shuffling around.

The former third-round pick was limited for most of training camp but started to rotate in with starters on team drills towards the end of camp, which is a good sign to see. Brown should find himself in the starting five very soon. He missed the first preseason game, but that shouldn’t be of concern, as the Bills rested all of their starters.

The coaching staff will likely take it slow with Brown, and if he isn’t able to be ready to go by the start of the season, then Quessenberry is more than capable of starting if need be. Known more for his ability to run block than pass protect, he started 17 games for the Titans last year.

The Bills training staff has a good reputation for a reason, and with Brown working with the first team at the end of camp, there shouldn’t be much of a concern for his injury in the regular season.

The second-year right tackle won’t be out for very long, I can guarantee you that much. While Brown looked great in some starts last year, he did struggle in others, which is expected from a rookie tackle. Hopefully, with experience, he’ll be able to begin his new campaign exactly how he ended last year’s: by standing up his man and not letting them anywhere close to Allen, and also by getting out in space in the run game and pummeling defenders:

Standing at 6’8’’, his build makes him the ideal tackle in the NFL. I can’t imagine that any defensive end looks forward to going up against him. If Brown continues to improve his footwork and his core stability, he’s going to be a tough guy to move on that offensive line for a long time. The Bills offense struggled during the stretch of games he missed last year:

I know we are all looking forward to seeing Brown back in action, considering some of the moments he had last year. Whether it was pointing out to defensive back Desmond King how short he was, or taking a fan’s beer and dumping it on himself after a Diggs TD, Brown is quite the character and fans love him.

Getting to know Spencer Brown off the field

I’m sure there’s some things us Bills fans would love to know about Spencer Brown and what makes this man so unique both on and off the field.

In an interview from “What’s the Scoop”, he said his biggest starstruck moment was realizing he was on the same team as Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs. He also said seeing Aaron Rodgers in person was a moment that was very surreal for him and one he would never forget.

In his free time, Brown likes building legos with Tommy Doyle. Who would’ve thought that? Yes, the big, intimidating offensive lineman likes building star wars legos in his free time. The more you know.

Finally, as many of us know, Brown grew up in Iowa. An interesting piece from his interview that I found pretty shocking was that he said fellow Iowans will go out and grab a lawn chair and a beer and sit on their front porch and watch the tornado roll on by. I’m sure many of us would get into the basement and find other means of cover if a tornado was storming through our neighborhood, but hey, I’m sure Iowans are very used to that by now.

I can’t wait to see Brown back on the field this season helping the Bills to win football games. I really believe there is a lot of potential for his future, and with him and Dawkins at the tackle positions, Josh Allen should be in good hands for years to come.
