When the final second ticked off the clock versus the Patriots last Sunday in Buffalo, Sean McDermott became the first Head Coach in Bills history to win at least ten games in five consecutive seasons.
McDermott, who tied Marv Levy’s record after going 13-3 last season, has now had winning seasons in seven of his eight and with a win on Sunday versus Miami, will have led the Bills to the playoffs in seven of eight seasons as well.
The only non-winning season of Sean McDermotts tenure in Buffalo was 2018, Josh Allen’s rookie season, when his Bills went 6-10.
Sean McDermott has been the most successful regular season head coach in Bills history. Although he has a while to go to surpass Marv Levy’s 112 regular season wins, McDermott’s 72 wins puts him solely in second place, passing Lou Saban’s 68 earlier this season.
Regular season winning percentage belongs to McDermott, however. His .637 winning percentage dipped slightly this season but is still first in Bills history with Levy trailing him by .022. A win this Sunday versus the Dolphins would put McDermott at .640.
If McDermott wants to be considered the “Greatest” Bills coach of all-time, however, he’s going to need to not only improve his record in the playoffs, but probably win a Super Bowl. Marv Levy, of course, went to four consecutive Super Bowl’s in the ‘90s—a record that likely will never be matched again. And as you know, Levy lost all four Super Bowls. Should McDermott win a Super Bowl, there’s no doubt he’d be the greatest Bills head coach of all-time.
