A few things to keep an eye on as Bills training camp begins

Training Camp is now underway for the 2022 season and the wait is finally over to see Bills football. We made it, Bills Mafia. If you weren’t excited enough, take a look at QB1 Josh Allen stepping onto the field at St. John Fisher for the first time since 2019:

As camp gets going ahead of a promising season for the Bills, let’s look at a handful of important storylines to keep an eye on, starting with the latest on All-Pro cornerback Tre’Davious White.

Tre’Davious White “on schedule” and “looks really good”

Head Coach Sean McDermott had reaffirming words on the status of cornerback Tre White on Sunday morning as he addressed the press.

“He’s on schedule,” McDermott said. “He looks really good… he’s working his tail off. Tre is a consummate pro so that has not changed, and we’re just excited to get him back when we can get him back.”

So, we don’t know what “on schedule” means in terms of a return for White, but it’s reassuring to know there hasn’t been a setback. Bills fans are hoping that it means it sooner rather than later, but you don’t want to rush a guy back and risk re-injury, especially a two-time All-Pro. McDermott also confirmed that White is starting out training camp on the PUP list, meaning he is ineligible to practice at camp because of an injury that he suffered prior to camp (torn ACL on Thanksgiving, 2021). He is staying involved off to the side of camp, however:

Rodger Saffold missing start of camp due to injured ribs

Newly-acquired guard Rodger Saffold will begin training camp on the Non-Football Injury list after injuring his ribs in a car accident. This was news to Bills fans this morning. So, we’ll have to wait to see Saffold get into the mix. He was a pro bowler last year with the Titans and was a second-team All-Pro in 2017 with the Rams. His absence gives opportunity to a player like Cody Ford to play a bigger role at the start of camp.

Here’s an update from GM Brandon Beane on Saffold’s injury:

Note: RT Spencer Brown is practicing, but he’s slowly working back from surgery.

Jordan Poyer reports to camp

Amongst contract talks and negotiations, All-Pro safety Jordan Poyer has reported to camp and is practicing with the team. Poyer’s commitment to Buffalo was never really in question, but it sure is good news for Bills Mafia to see him out there with his teammates. And, he looks more than excited to be back on the field:

It’s also been reported that Poyer’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is in attendance at St. John Fisher University.

Von Miller begins first training camp with the Bills

Aside from maybe Josh Allen, Bills fans were probably most excited to see Von Miller, who is heading into his first training camp with the Bills. The ”missing piece” to a Super Bowl and the mentorship Miller can offer to his new teammates has been talked about quite a bit, and now it’s finally time to get to business. Bills fans looked ecstatic to see the two-time Super Bowl champion edge rusher in person at St. John Fisher:

That wraps up the major storylines from day one of Bills camp. The Bills are back in the swing of things and the season kicks off in just 46 days in Los Angeles. Find Built In Buffalo on our various social media channels and podcasts to stay up to date on all things Bills!
