Three under-the-radar players with chance to make Bills 53-man roster

Training camp begins for the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday, July 24^th. Luckily for the team, there won’t be too much intrigue on who makes the 53-man roster aside from a few positions.

The training camp/preseason period will be a time for many Bills players to sharpen their craft and coaches to implement playbooks. Barring injury, there are roughly 48 locks to make the Bills 53-man roster this year. That means there may be some “under the radar” players who could steal roster spots this September.

Here are a few players to monitor:

Tyrell Shavers, Wide Receiver

The Bills typically keep six wide receivers on their final-53. Shoo-in’s to make the roster are Keon Coleman, Khalil Shakir, Curtis Samuel, Mack Hollins and Marquez Valdez-Scantling. The final roster spot will likely go to veteran Chase Claypool, who in spring minicamps has been showing flashes of his old self. However, with special teams becoming more important this offseason, Tyrell Shavers might be viewed as a role player whose focus is kick coverage and won’t demand targets in the offense.

Richard Gouraige, Offensive Tackle

One of Brandon Beane’s strong suits is developing offensive line depth and making trades before the 53-man roster is finalized. Richard Gouraige had a strong preseason last year after being signed as an undrafted free agent and landed on the Bills practice squad. If Gouraige continues to impress in training camp and preseason this year, look for him to either be traded for draft picks or land a spot on the roster. If that’s the case the Bills could look to move other fringe roster guys on the o-line such as Ryan Van Demark or Alec Anderson.

Ja’Marcus Ingram, Cornerback

The Bills’ first four cornerbacks are decided with Christian Benford, Rasul Douglas, Taron Johnson and Kaiir Elam. Rookie Daequan Hardy is the front-runner for kick returning duties and will likely be the fifth corner. This leaves one open position and I view Ja’Marcus Ingram as the frontrunner to take this spot. Ingram, a product of the University at Buffalo, signed with the Bills as an undrafted free agent in May of 2022 and has seen action in a total of five games over the past two years while spending the vast majority of his time on the team’s practice squad.
